Family Systems

I had the honor to be apart of a yearlong training series called “Building the Holistic Woman”, the brainchild of my mentor in Mary Kay. The topic for my episodes was on “Family Systems”.

My husband and I both have high energy careers + 5 highly active and overly-involved children. For nearly 14 years we have been in the trenches and throes of home life, investing in our careers, parenting and working to build beauty and meaning in our household. We have learned some mindsets and systems along the way have greatly supported us.

We have had good days & bad days, highs & lows, ups & downs, failure & victories. God’s grace has been ever-present, we have been willing to learn in the process of failing forward, and I attempted to bring the best of what we have learned to this episode of the yearlong series.

I have about 3 hours of content that I packed into an hour. This would probably be best in a workshop style class where there is more time to take a deep dive into the topics and process the information in community. Maybe someday we will do that.

“The family is God’s primary discipleship plan.” - Matt Chandler, pastor of The Village Church in TX

The household is where we all first learn to live and practice the greatest command of loving God and loving people.  Think of your home as a little school of love, where your children first feel that love, and then learn to extend it to God and others.  Let love be the root of everything that happens in your home.

There are a list of resources I mention during the training that you can find below. I hope you enjoy the episode of “Family Systems”.

RESOURCES

- “Habits of the Household” by Justin Whitmel Earley

- “Come Let us Adore Him” by Paul Davis Tripp (Advent devotion)

- Here’s more info about how we do the Advent season. After getting a lot of questions from friends, I decided to explain this cherished tradition in a blog post: https://www.allllthethings.com/post/our-most-loved-family-tradition

- “Love to the Uttermost” by John Piper (Holy Week devotion)

- Thebiggeststory.com (104 AMAZING videos that are free that tell the story of the Bible; this could be curriculum for an entire year to go through the videos together, which are so excellent. There is also curriculum you can purchase.)

- Book series ideas for out loud bedtime reading: Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, The Hardy Boys, the Laura Ingals Wilder books, The Wingfeather Saga series, The Hatchet series (those are just a few).
